Description
Pioneer Park Gawler East is a serene open space with a historical legacy.
Originally designated as the public cemetery of Gawler town, the park has a rich history dating back to 1847. Today, the park serves as a peaceful area that pays homage to its past, featuring a stone cairn with the names of those buried in the old cemetery. Visitors can explore the park's history through displays and information on-site, as well as view headstones that were removed from the cemetery at the entrance to the Gawler Cemetery in Willaston.
In addition to its historical significance, Pioneer Park Gawler East also showcases contemporary art and memorials. The McKinlay Memorial, erected in 1875, can be found at the entrance to the old cemetery. The War Memorial, designed by renowned artist Robert Hannaford AM in 2017, offers a unique approach to traditional war memorials.
Pioneer Park Gawler East is open to the public year-round and is a great destination for picnics, strolls, or moments of contemplation. During the summer, the park hosts the popular Gawler Carols by Candlelight event, providing a festive atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
