Pumicestone Passage

Pumicestone Passage Coochin Creek is a 35 km long waterway located between Caloundra and Deception Bay.

It is known for being a part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park and is one of Australia's most important bird and marine habitats. The presence of various aquatic species such as dolphins, turtles, fish, and birds make this passage an excellent spot for nature enthusiasts.

In Pumicestone Passage, there are about 1,500 resident shorebirds of 11 species and nearly 20,000 migratory shorebirds of 24 species, providing nature enthusiasts with a diverse range of bird watching opportunities. Dugongs can be seen all year round, even in winter when the water temperature is lower. Fishing is also popular in the Passage, both from the shore and by boat.

Pumicestone Passage can be visited throughout the year. Different migratory bird species visit at different times, allowing bird watching enthusiasts to enjoy the experience year-round. Dugongs are visible all year round, and fishing can be enjoyed in any season.

To get to Pumicestone Passage Coochin Creek, you can access it by road, air, or water. If you're traveling by car, it's approximately an hour's drive north of Brisbane. If you're coming from the Sunshine Coast, you can follow the coastal road and cross the passage a few minutes before the Caloundra exit. The passage is also accessible by boat, with popular ramps like Coochin Creek or Golden Beach available for launching your own boat. Guided tours and boat rentals are also available from various marinas along the Sunshine Coast.
