Description

Queens Park in Toowoomba, Queensland, began as a public reserve in 1869 and was later separated from the Botanic Gardens.

The park was created for public recreation, while the gardens were intended for botanic research. Urban public parks were popular in the 19th century due to their contribution to public health and recreation. The establishment of Botanic Gardens grew from the increasing interest in scientific understanding of the natural world.

The current site of Queens Park was reserved for a public reserve in 1869 and was surveyed shortly after. It was initially used for grazing animals and as a source of clay for bricks. Control of the reserve passed to the Toowoomba Council in the late 1860s. Development of the park began in 1873 with fencing and the establishment of a Botanic Gardens section. The gardens were well established by 1875, while the park still needed development. Over the years, additional sports fields and gardens were added to the park.

Queens Park and Botanic Gardens are significant as a 19th-century public recreation reserve. The Botanic Gardens demonstrate the knowledge associated with economic and ornamental botany. They also represent the introduction of scientific centers in the context of botanical understanding. The park and gardens have been used for recreational activities and are associated with local citizens through memorials and gardens commemorating their contributions. They are also associated with Walter Hill, who designed the Botanic Gardens, and William Groom, who played a role in the establishment and development of the park.

Today, Queens Park is a popular attraction with mature trees, walking tracks, and beautiful gardens. It offers visitors the chance to experience the grandeur and history of 19th-century public recreation and ornamental botanic gardens
