Description
Raglan is a small beachside town located 48 km west of Hamilton, New Zealand on State Highway 23.
It is known for its surfing, and volcanic black sand beaches. Raglan is New Zealand’s original surf town, and surfing culture in the town has embraced wanderlust as a town motto. Raglan’s waves have been surfed for more than half a century, with the Raglan Point Boardrider’s club founded in 1962. Raglan’s surf culture is also included in several films, including Last Paradise, which tells the story of the Waikato surf town’s key role in developing New Zealand’s adventure sports industry.
Raglan Museum is a must-visit attraction for those interested in the town's history. The museum contains historic artifacts and archives from the region, including photographs that showcase Raglan’s rich history. You’ll find many early copies of The Raglan County Chronicle, which was the town’s local newspaper. The museum also has an exhibition of local surfing history, which is a great way to learn about the town's surfing culture. The museum is open every day, and admission fees are NZ2 for children.
Raglan is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand, and the black sand beaches are unique to this part of the world. Raglan Beach, Ngarunui Beach, and Whale Bay are some of the most popular beaches in the area. Raglan Beach is the main beach in the town, and it is a great place to swim. The town is also home to a variety of cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a great place to spend a day or two. Whether you’re a surfer or just looking for a relaxing beach getaway, Raglan is definitely worth a visit.
