Safety Beach

Safety Beach is a scenic seaside town located on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria. It is situated about 56 km (35 mi) south of Melbourne's Central Business District and borders Port Philip Bay to the west.

With a population of 6,328 recorded in the 2021 census, Safety Beach offers a picturesque setting between the foothills of Mount Martha and Arthurs Seat.

The history of Safety Beach dates back to the early 1800s when Hugh Jamieson purchased 5,120 acres of land, known as Jamieson's Special Survey. Over the years, the area saw pioneers working in gold mining and other industries. The town was originally called Shark Bay but was renamed Safety Beach in 1963 due to the suggestion of local lifesavers and council, aiming to attract more tourists to the area.

One of the notable features of Safety Beach is Martha Cove, a large inland harbour and residential development located at the foot of Mount Martha. Despite initial opposition, Martha Cove has become a thriving residential community in Safety Beach after recovering from financial difficulties.

For beach enthusiasts, Safety Beach offers a calm and relaxing sandy bay with a swimming beach that is perfect for boating. The foreshore reserve provides a children's playground and BBQ areas for visitors to enjoy. Sailing enthusiasts can visit the Safety Beach Sailing Club, established in 1967, which has hosted numerous state and national titles and is known for its excellence in sailing.
