Description
Lady Elliot Island, located on the fringing reef, is home to several shipwrecks.
One of these wrecks is the Severance yacht, which sank in 1998 and has become a popular dive site. Divers can explore the fully intact yacht, which sits on a sandy sea floor 21 meters deep. The shipwreck is adorned with beautiful soft corals, attracting a variety of marine life including cobia, sweetlips, emperors, snappers, trevally, gropers, turtles, stingrays, reef sharks, eagle rays, and manta rays. Inside the yacht, divers can observe tasselled wobbegongs, coral trout, coral cod, lionfish, and thousands of shrimps.
To reach Lady Elliot Island, visitors can fly to Hervey Bay or Bundaberg airport and then take a daily flight to the island. Alternatively, ferry services are available from Hervey Bay. Once on the island, a short boat ride will take divers to the Severance shipwreck dive site.
