Sherwood Nature Reserve

Welcome to Sherwood Nature Reserve, an incredible protected reserve located near Woolgoolga in the beautiful north coast region of New South Wales, Australia.

The reserve is a hidden gem nestled in sub-tropical rainforest, with Woolgoolga Creek running through it. It boasts rich biodiversity with 92 known tree species, including significant species like blue quandong, white booyong, hoop pine, blush bloodwood, strangler fig, and many more. The reserve is a natural habitat for various creatures, including the rare mottled tree snail and over 50 species of native animals. Birdwatching is exceptional here, with the opportunity to spot birds like the Rainbow Lorikeet, Aus Bittern, and Superb Fairy-wren.

Sherwood Nature Reserve has an interesting history. Originally dedicated in 1917 as part of Wedding Bells State Forest, it was subsequently gazetted as a flora reserve in 1971. The reserve incorporates the former Woolgoolga Creek Flora Reserve. Intensive logging occurred during the early 1900s, but rainforest logging ceased in 1917 and hardwood logging ceased in the 1940s. The eastern part of the reserve includes areas cleared for hardwood plantation during the 1960s, with flooded gum being the most commonly planted species. Additionally, the eastern section of the reserve was previously home to banana plantations, which were established in the early 1900s and replaced with hardwood plantations in the late 1960s.
