Description
Silvan Reservoir Park is a historic off-stream reservoir located in Silvan, 40 kilometres (25 mi) east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Managed by Melbourne Water, the reservoir has a capacity of 40,000 ML (1.4 billion cu ft). It is an off-stream storage reservoir that relies on water from other reservoirs due to its small catchment area of 9 square kilometres (3.5 sq mi). Water for Silvan is transferred from Upper Yarra, O'Shannassy, and Thomson (via Upper Yarra) reservoirs.
It directly supplies water to many of Melbourne's eastern suburbs and other off-stream storage reservoirs like Cardinia and Greenvale.
Silvan Reservoir was built between 1926 and 1931 in response to a severe drought in 1914, which highlighted the need for a new water supply to handle Melbourne's growing needs. The reservoir was officially opened on 7 July 1931, measuring 644 metres (2,113 ft) long and 219 metres (719 ft) wide, creating a reservoir that is 43 metres (141 ft) deep. In 1983, the wall of the reservoir developed cracks, and remedial works were undertaken. This year also saw the addition of a picnic ground to Silvan Reservoir Park, which is now managed by Parks Victoria. Visitors can explore the park and its surroundings, learn about the reservoir's history and ecology, and enjoy a picnic with family and friends.
