Description

South Head is a scenic headland in Sydney, Australia, offering stunning views of the Tasman Sea, Middle Head, Manly, and North Head.

It is home to the historic Hornby Lighthouse, the third oldest lighthouse in Australia.

The South Head Heritage Trail is a popular attraction, starting at Camp Cove Beach and leading to Lady Bay, one of Sydney's nude beaches. Along the trail, visitors can see the Hornby Lighthouse, lightkeeper's cottages, and gun emplacements from the late 19th century. Panoramic views of Middle Head, Manly, North Head, and the Tasman Sea can also be enjoyed.

HMAS Watson, the Royal Australian Navy's training base, is located on South Head. It is used for training naval personnel in Anti-Submarine Warfare.

North Head, southeast of Manly, is a beautiful headland and part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. It is known for its sandstone promontory and is home to the former Quarantine Station.

Middle Head, situated between North Head and South Head, is also part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. It features a network of defence fortifications and tunnels, including the Middle Head Fortifications, Georges Head Battery, and Lower Georges Heights Commanding Position, which date back to the 1800s.

Several sites on the Heads are of historical importance and have been listed on the Australian National Heritage List. Middle Head Fortifications are among the heritage listings on Middle Head.
