Southend is a picturesque coastal town located on the southern shore of Rivoli Bay, in the south-east region of South Australia.
The town has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was founded by George Grey, Governor of South Australia. Originally called Grey Town, it was later renamed Grey and then Southend. The boundaries of the locality were established in 1995 and include the government town of Southend and the former Southend Shack Site.
Southend is a popular destination for a relaxing beach getaway. The stunning white sand beaches of Rivoli Bay can be accessed via the Southend Caravan Park. The Bluff, a scenic destination, is located just a short drive away. The Rivoli Bay Sailing Club offers sailing opportunities for visitors from October to April.
The locality of Southend includes the Canunda National Park and Lake Frome Conservation Park, which are protected areas with walking and hiking trails. According to the 2016 Australian census, Southend had a population of 263 people. It is located within the federal division of Barker, the state electoral district of MacKillop, and the local government area of the Wattle Range Council.
