It was created as a minor catchment area to supply water to Bendigo for both domestic and mining purposes. Now, it has become one of the main water supply sources of the Coliban Water Network.
Spring Gully reservoir is a great spot for fishing, and it has become a favourite destination for anglers. They come in large numbers to catch redfin, golden perch or the occasional trout. The bushland reserve surrounding the reservoir is also a great place to hike.
