Teerk Roo Ra National Park (Peel Island)

Teerk Roo Ra National Park (Peel Island) is a Moreton Bay island that covers an area of 519 hectares.

It offers visitors the perfect destination for exploring significant cultural heritage values and natural conservation values, both terrestrial and marine. The island is surrounded by mangroves, except for a sand beach on the southern side that forms Horseshoe Bay.

Rich in cultural significance, Teerk Roo Ra is the only intact example of a multiracial lazaret in Australia. It served as a lazaret from 1907 to 1959, housing leprosy patients. Before that, it was a quarantine station from 1874 to the 1890s and a home for 'inebriates' from 1910 to 1916.

Boating, fishing, and swimming are popular activities around the island. Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay provide clean and calm waters for swimming. Platypus Bay is also known for its shipwrecks that attract a variety of marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkeling. Only Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay are open to the public, while the rest of the island is a restricted access area to preserve its historic remains. The best time to visit the national park is between April and October when the temperatures are mild and the seas are calm.

Teerk Roo Ra National Park (Peel Island) can be accessed by private boat or by joining a boat trip from Redland Bay Marina. It's important to note that there are no official camping sites on the island, and open fires, including campfires and charcoal fires
