Description
The Bluff, also known as Rosetta Head, is a popular coastal attraction located in Encounter Bay, South Australia.
It is situated 4km southwest of Victor Harbor and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The headland rises 97 meters above sea level and can be accessed by a one-way loop road suitable for walkers and cyclists.
At the summit of The Bluff, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the area, including Granite Island to the east and the rugged southern coastline to the southwest. From June to October, there is also a chance to spot visiting whales. A 600m loop walk from the car park provides an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the coast.
On the western side of The Bluff, visitors can explore Petrel Cove, the starting point of the Heysen Walking Trail. This trail offers a chance to experience the coast and observe the local flora and fauna up close.
The area surrounding The Bluff has a rich history. The indigenous people named it 'Longkuwar', and the Ramindjeri people settled in the Victor Harbor area due to the abundance of sea life, including whales. The headland was also home to a 19th-century whaling station from 1837 to the 1860s.
The Bluff has an interesting mining history as well. Copper and gold were discovered in the area, leading to the establishment of the Coolanine mine in 1863. It was later reopened in 1882 after the discovery of lead. Lead, silver, and oxide of tin were also mined in the area.
