Description

The Domain is a 34-hectare area of open space in the heart of Sydney.

It has a rich history, from its military use in the early years of the colony to becoming a public park in the late 19th century. Today, it is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens Trust and provides an escape from the city for the people of Sydney. Divided into three sections, it adjoins the Royal Botanic Gardens and offers scenic views of the Sydney Opera House.

The Domain is a crucial venue for outdoor concerts, open-air events, and political gatherings. It is also a popular spot for locals to exercise and relax. The summer months see the Sydney Festival take place here, with events occurring in the Phillip precinct. Annual events in the Domain include Carols in the Domain, Symphony in the Domain, Jazz in the Domain, and Opera in The Domain. The Domain is also home to the unique Open Air Cinema and Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour.

The Royal Botanic Gardens and The Domain were listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999 due to their exceptional historical, social, aesthetic, and scientific values. These sites have contributed to the growth, development, and cultural landscape of Sydney for over two centuries.
