Thevenard Island Nature Reserve

Tourist attractions

Description

Thevenard Island is great for bird watching and relaxing.

Thevenard Island is great for bird watching and relaxing. Marine turtles use the island beaches in summer for nesting and resting and may be observed from a respectful distance while they dig nests and lay eggs. Females often rest at the water line before moving back out to sea, please do not disturb them at this time.

Thevenard Island is shared tenure. There are two leases in addition to the nature reserve:

  • A mining lease for the purpose of oil extraction and is currently in care and maintenance. Access to the mining lease is restricted to authorised personnel only.
  • The other is a resort comprising self-contained cabins and bookings may be made at the Mackerel Islands.
