Thomson River

Thomson River is a perennial river in Queensland, Australia, named after The Hon.

Sir Edward Deas Thomson. It flows through the central west and western regions of the state, forming part of the Lake Eyre Basin. The river has a rich history and unique features.

The river originates as Torrens Creek from the Alma Range, part of the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. It changes its name to the Thomson River near Muttaburra, where several other watercourses meet. It then flows in a south-westerly direction, passing through towns like Longreach, Stonehenge, and Jundah, before joining the Barcoo River to create Cooper Creek. The Thomson River is over 350km long and is joined by 41 named tributaries.

The river flows through semi-arid blacksoil plains, which are mainly used for sheep and beef cattle industries. During monsoon rains, floods are common in the river's catchment area. The river can become several kilometers wide during these floods, but for much of the time, it transforms into a collection of billabongs.

The Thomson River is a significant site to visit in the Channel Country and Galilee subregion. Visitors can experience the river's beauty by taking a boat ride or going camping to enjoy the natural scenery.
