Description

Turtle Bommie in Cairns is a popular diving spot known for its encounters with turtles.

Located off Saxon Reef, this dive site features coral gardens and bommies at depths up to 15 meters. The main attraction is Turtle Bommie, the largest and most prominent bommie at the site.

At Turtle Bommie, there is a bustling cleaning station for reef fish. Cleaner wrasse can be seen performing their daily cleaning services for the fish, entering their gills and open mouths. Turtles also visit the bommie to get cleaned, often resting gently amidst the soft corals. Pelagic fish like barracudas, mackerels, and trevallies can be spotted swimming in the area. Additionally, there are various colorful marine creatures such as nudibranchs, octopuses, flatworms, sea stars, and occasionally a broadclub cuttlefish. This period offers more stable weather, calmer seas, and exceptional visibility. The water temperature ranges from 22-30 °C during this time. Cairns is easily accessible from major cities in Australia, with daily flights to Cairns International Airport. From there, Turtle Bommie can be reached by boat from Cairns Marina or nearby resorts such as Green Island, Fitzroy Island, and Frankland Islands. Guided tours and private charters are available depending on your preference and budget.
