Description

Experience a truly unique setting at Umpherston Sinkhole in Mount Gambier.

Formed by the erosion of limestone rocks by seawater waves, the sinkhole was originally created when the chamber’s roof collapsed and is now a beautiful sunken garden. Established in 1886 by James Umpherston, the garden is open from dawn to dusk and is filled with possums at night. The garden is filled with sculptures inspired by the geological processes and terraces that offer stunning views. While you can explore the area on foot, please note that there is no wheelchair access to the garden floor. Dogs are allowed on a leash in the park surrounding the sinkhole, but must not enter the sinkhole itself. Visit the Umpherston Sinkhole and enjoy its tranquil atmosphere and unique landscape.
