It covers 2.02 hectares of land and was transformed into a public garden in 1931 to honor the servicemen who fought and died in the First World War. The gardens were designed by Thomas Kerr, the chief landscape gardener of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, and construction was completed in 1931. The Memorial Arch, a monumental entrance to the garden, was constructed in 1925 as a tribute to volunteer soldiers who served in 1916. The cenotaph and the Chisholm Fountain were also added to the gardens, further adding to its significance.
