Description

Wangaratta Common Nature Conservation Reserve is a large protected area in the northwest of Wangaratta.

It is known for its diverse plant life and opportunities for bird watching. The reserve is well-maintained by Parks Victoria and offers a unique glimpse into the native grasslands and woodlands of the region. It can be accessed through public roads such as Tone Road, Mason Street, and Greta Road, as well as walking tracks from Hay Avenue and Connell Street.

The reserve boasts over 96 species of diverse plants that make up its stunning native grasslands. Parks Victoria burns the grasslands every one to two years to maintain their structure and diversity. The reserve is best experienced during spring and dry winters, as it can become boggy during wet periods. The grassy Grey Box woodland in the higher parts of the reserve is home to a seasonal River Red Gum wetland and offers excellent bird watching opportunities.

Wangaratta Common Nature Conservation Reserve is particularly stunning in spring and early summer when the native grasslands are in full bloom. The sunny weather of dry winters also provides a good option to explore the park. To get to the reserve, you can take public roads such as Tone Road, Mason Street, and Greta Road. There are also walking tracks from Hay Avenue and Connell Street, which provide peaceful and relaxing walks for visitors. The reserve is well-marked and easy to locate, whether you are driving or walking.
