Description

Ward Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in Whanganui, New Zealand.

Established in 1901 by Joseph Ward, a pioneer New Zealand telescope maker, and administered by the Wanganui Astronomical Society, the observatory is named after its founder and first president. Ward was instrumental in establishing both the Wanganui Astronomical Society and the Wanganui Observatory.

Joseph Ward was an astronomer and telescope maker who migrated to New Zealand from England in the late 1800s. He settled in Whanganui and opened a lending library, a bookshop, and a stationery business called "Book Nook." In April 1901, a brilliant comet appeared in the New Zealand evening skies, and Ward, along with other enthusiasts, decided to form an astronomical society. The Wanganui Astronomical Society was established, and Ward became its first president.

The observatory houses a 9½ inch (24 cm) telescope, which is the largest unmodified refractor telescope in use in New Zealand. In the Astronomical Society's heyday before and during World War I, Joseph Ward was Honorary Director of the Observatory, and Charles Whitmore Babbage, grandson of Charles Babbage, was the President, Secretary, and Treasurer. At this time, Ward and his assistant Thomas Allison catalogued over 200 double stars, 88 of which are still recognised as “Ward doubles”. Ward Observatory is open to the public twice a week for viewing nights, where visitors can observe the stars and planets through the telescope. The observatory is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, and the telescope is a star attraction.

Ward Observatory is located at 51A Virginia Road, Whanganui, New Zealand. It is easily accessible by car or public transport. Ward Observatory is a must-visit destination for astronomy enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring the wonders of the universe. With its rich history, impressive telescope, and public viewing nights, it is a unique and fascinating attraction that is sure to leave visitors in awe.
