Description

Warragamba Dam is a heritage-listed concrete gravity dam located in the outer South Western Sydney suburb of Warragamba, Wollondilly Shire in New South Wales, Australia.

It was constructed between 1948 and 1960 to address Sydney's water shortage during World War II. The dam's catchment area covers 9,051 square kilometres and includes several rivers. While it was not primarily designed for flood control, it can help mitigate flooding by holding back floodwaters. The dam currently holds a reservoir of 2,031 gigalitres.

Access to Warragamba Dam was restricted after upgrades were completed in 1999, but it reopened to the public in 2009. From 2012 to 2013, the dam wall and terrace gardens were open to the public on weekends and public holidays. The Warragamba Emergency Scheme, including the dam wall, the Balance Reservoir, and associated cottages, was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999.

In popular culture, the phrase "Warragamba Slammer" is used in Australian pubs and restaurants to reference the dam's water supply.
