Description
Welcome to Wellington Square Park and Playground (Moort-ak Waadiny).
Located on Wellington Street in East Perth, this park has a rich and diverse history. Originally a swamp, it was drained for horse exercise in the 1830s and became known as the Recreation Ground or "Rec". In 1898, it was transformed into a cricket field named after the Duke of Wellington. It served as the primary cricket ground in Perth before the WACA Ground was built. The square was also used for football matches and as a training ground for the Perth Rugby Club. In 2020, the city of Perth invested $18.7 million in upgrading the park, including the construction of a new playground, basketball courts, paths, and facilities. The redevelopment was opened to the public in March 2021.
Today, Wellington Square remains an important meeting place in the city. It hosts cricket and athletic competitions organized by local schools and clubs. The park is also a live music venue and a popular spot for family outings, thanks to its newly upgraded playground and basketball courts.
