Description

Welcome to Wingham Brush Nature Reserve! This protected area is located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales and covers 8 hectares (20 acres).

It is a rare example of sub-tropical lowland rainforest and is situated on the Manning River. Due to extensive clearing for housing and agriculture, preserved areas like this one are essential for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.

The reserve's soils are alluvial and have been derived from the Manning River, enriched by basaltic deposits upstream. With an average annual rainfall of 1,100 millimetres (43 in), the conditions here are ideal for the diverse flora and fauna to thrive.

Wingan, meaning "where bats come to drink" in the local indigenous Biripi language, holds cultural significance for the indigenous people of the area. They have been visiting this rainforest for various purposes since ancient times, utilizing it for food, medicines, fibres, and social gatherings. The rainforest continues to hold spiritual importance for the Biripi people.

We hope this introduction has inspired you to explore Wingham Brush Nature Reserve and discover its unique natural beauty and cultural heritage.
