Description

Wittunga Botanic Garden is one of the three Botanic Gardens in Adelaide, South Australia.

It is located on Shepherds Hill Road, Blackwood, on the western scarp of the Adelaide Hills, just a 25-minute drive from Adelaide City Centre.

The garden began as a formal English garden in 1901 and has since evolved to include South African and native Australian plants. It features collections of Erica, Leucadendron, and Protea, as well as displays of exotic bulbs and colorful annuals. The majority of South African plants come from the Cape Province district, which has a similar climate to Adelaide. The Australian collection showcases plants from the Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, and Southern Western Australia, including a variety of eucalypts.

Visitors can enjoy strolling along the pathways through the Terrace and Sandplain Gardens, observing the distinctive and colorful plant collections. The garden is also home to a variety of birds, attracted by the flowers of the plants.

In addition to its plant collections, the garden offers amenities such as small rotundas with seating and lawns for picnicking. There are also interpretive botanical signage and two ponds connected by a spillway, providing a habitat for native waterbirds and amphibians. Wittunga Botanic Garden hosts special events, including an annual outdoor concert called Wittunga Under the Stars. This concert, coordinated by the Lions Club of Blackwood Inc., features live music, jazz, and dance performances.
