Moyne islands

Griffiths Island is situated at the mouth of the Moyne River near Port Fairy in Victoria, Australia. Spanning 1.5 kilometers in length and 0.8 kilometers at its widest point, the island serves as a refuge for diverse plant and animal species. Connected to the mainland by a causeway, Griffiths Island is easily accessible on foot and forms part of the Port Fairy and Belfast Coastline Protection Reserve, managed by the Moyne Shire Council.

Lady Julia Percy Island, also known as Deen Maar or Dhinmar in Gunditjmara language, is positioned 8.1 kilometers off the coast in the Bass Strait. Covering an area of 130 hectares, the island measures 2.4 kilometers in length and 1.2 kilometers in width. As an unincorporated area under the direct administration of the Government of Victoria, Lady Julia Percy Island is a significant breeding site for Australian fur seals, hosting approximately 10-12,000 individuals, the largest colony of its kind in the country.

Characterized by a windswept and treeless landscape covered predominantly with grasses and bracken on thin black soil, Lady Julia Percy Island is home to the vulnerable Shore Spleenwort plant species, Asplenium obtusatum. Visitors can embark on boat cruises from Port Fairy to the waters surrounding the island, offering opportunities to witness the seal colony, observe whales, and enjoy the diverse seabird populations during the journey.
