Central Otago museums

Central Otago, New Zealand, is home to several museums that showcase the region's unique stories and history. The Cromwell Museum in Cromwell Mall originated from a local historical group in the 1960s, focusing on gold mining, early settlers, agricultural items, and Chinese artifacts. The collection has grown through donations and volunteer efforts.

The Central Stories William Bodkin Memorial Museum in Alexandra highlights Central Otago's diverse history, including geology, early explorers, social history, gold mining, farming, and viticulture. The museum also houses critically threatened Otago skinks and features the John McCraw Research Room. Entry to the museum gallery is by donation.

The Tūhura Otago Museum in Dunedin, though not in Central Otago, offers captivating exhibits on nature, culture, and science. With free galleries and the Tūhura Science Centre, the museum provides an enriching experience for visitors interested in exploring these subjects.
