Cloncurry museums

The Cloncurry region in Queensland is home to two fascinating museums that showcase the history, culture, and natural wonders of the area. The John Flynn Place Museum and Art Gallery pays tribute to Reverend John Flynn and his team for their efforts in bringing healthcare to remote Australia. The museum follows the journey of Flynn's vision, from the birth of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Cloncurry in 1928 to its ongoing legacy. Visitors can explore the stories of the pioneers who dedicated their lives to improving the quality of life for rural Australians, including inventors, pilots, nurses, and everyday heroes living in harsh conditions.

The Cloncurry Unearthed Visitor Information Centre and Museum tells the story of Cloncurry and the surrounding district through objects and stories. The museum features a gem, rock, and mineral display, acknowledged as the most comprehensive collection in Australia. Visitors can also learn about the mining towns of Mary Kathleen and Kuridala, Dr. David Harvey Sutton, a community leader for over 50 years, and Ernest Henry, the founder of Cloncurry who discovered copper in the region. The museum showcases photographs and objects related to explorers Burke and Wills, as well as outdoor displays including steam engines, farming and mining equipment, and a unique rail ambulance.

Both museums offer a unique insight into the rich history and culture of the Cloncurry region, making them must-visit attractions for anyone travelling through the area.
