Wellard pubs

In the early days of the Swan River Colony, the first European settlers quickly turned to brewing beer as one of their initial activities upon arrival. With no controlled brewing and selling of alcohol initially, the local governing body soon established a licensing system to regulate these practices. By the end of 1830, both Perth and Fremantle were already home to numerous public houses, although supplies of beer could still run low between ships arriving with fresh stock. As time passed, various breweries emerged across the region. Lieutenant Bull set up a brewery near the Canning River in 1831, followed by William Devenish starting a brewery at Guildford in 1835, advertising "the best beer in the colony" due to the purity of the water in his well. Other notable breweries included James Stokes' Albion Brewery (renamed the Stanley) in Perth in 1836, and Edward Barron's brewery at Wattle Grove around 1838-9.
