Ōhau Wines is the only commercial vineyard in the Kāpiti/Horowhenua region, located in the semi-rural settlement of Ōhau, in the lower North Island of New Zealand. The winery has been producing award-winning wines since 2009, making use of the stony soil perfect for growing high-quality grapes and the pure water supply from the artesian well in the Tararua ranges. The vineyard offers a range of wines, including Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, and Pinot Noir, known for their unique aromatic expression that has captivated wine lovers worldwide.
Visitors to Ōhau Wines can experience free tastings for groups of 1 to 4 people, and larger groups are required to book in advance. The cellar door is nestled among 40 hectares of vines and is open from 11 am to 4.30 pm every day from September to March, and Monday to Friday from April to August. The winery's close-knit team works in harmony with the land, the people, and the community of Ōhau to create exceptional wines that delight and captivate aromatic wine lovers.
The vineyard's story began in 2006 when a group of locals discovered the boulders and river gravel left by the Ōhau River, leading to the decision to plant vines instead of building houses. Since then, the vineyard has grown to 35 hectares, owned by New Zealanders and managed by a team of permanent vineyard staff and casual workers from the local area.
