These coastal creations are reflective of David Wilkes Design’s unwavering eye-for-detail and personalised approach to its projects.

NORTH BEACH

Luxurious – yet simple and minimalist – this spectacular home has been designed
for a 506sqm site in North Beach, only 200m from the ocean.

Its dramatic form makes the best of an uneven block that slopes down to the right-hand side. Filling the void is a four-car garage excavated at the basement level, along with a large gym, sauna, wine cellar, and storage facilities.

Above this sit two other levels, approached via a lift or staircase.

On the ground floor, the children's bedrooms, study, and additional entertainment and living zones form the layout, along with an alfresco area that features an outdoor kitchen and above-ground pool with large glass windows.

Ocean views from the ground level to the northwest, and panoramic ocean views to the west from the upper level provided the perfect motivation for blurring the lines of the indoors and outdoors.

Upstairs, a large open-plan living area overlooks the ocean, along with the well-appointed master bedroom with walk-in 'robes and stylish ensuite.

The task of building up to this level was not without its challenges, however.
David Wilkes Design had to fit the three levels within the council height restrictions, which was achieved through a flat roof style, and sinking the lower level underground. The streamlined flat roof, with its large cantilevers and overhangs, gives a striking effect, as well as providing additional shading.

The pool was then raised above the ground so that it could sit over the garage below, with a viewing window adding an extra element from the street perspective.

NORTH BEACH

This home was positioned on a small rear site of just 270sqm.

Naturally for a block of this size, a double-storey elevation would be the preferable option, but the clients were set on a single-storey relaxed beach-style home.

The resulting functional three-bedroom, two-bathroom program is stunning, with a central living area that connects directly to the outdoors.

Like all of David Wilkes Design's projects, the first stage was the orientation of the site and ensuring the clients received maximum solar access from the north.
This was made possible through floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding doors, and high ceilings in the open-plan living zone.

Natural materials, such as the American oak timber veneer cabinets, a stone feature wall and stone tiling give the home a natural feel, which is offset by the white walls and an abundance of natural light to keep it feeling bright.

Breezeway louvre windows were then selected to help capture the sea breeze.

TRIGG

Continuing the coastal trend, this northern-suburb home has a front-row seat to Indian Ocean views.

The charming three-bedroom beach house is modest in size, but doesn't go unnoticed, with its painted white brick external finish paired with black accents, steel fascias, weathered timber decking, and windows that give depth to the elevation.

Highlight windows span the length of the living areas to allow the living room to be bathed in great northern sun.

Consideration was given to street noise, which dictated the placement of the master bedroom at the rear for peace and quiet.

Internally, timber-lined bulkheads and polished concrete floors add character and durability, while retractable awnings to the rear provide shading when required.
Powerful sea breezes meant the preferred site of the pool was towards the back. However, when weather conditions are more favourable, the front deck provides an alternative entertaining space, with enviable views out to the horizon at sunset.
