Melding the old with the new, Kensington Design strikes the perfect balance in this family home resulting in a classic charm that’s brimming with luxury.

South Perth

Retaining the original character of this 1930s Federation-style home was at the forefront of the clients' design brief, as was an extension to create more room for the family. The front of the property – the entry and three rooms – was preserved for its character and historical context, and the remainder was demolished to create a fresh look while keeping within the architectural style.

Kensington Design created a new living area to the north of the original structure to maximise the benefits of a solar-passive design, and to overlook the garden and pool.

A classic jarrah timber staircase was positioned adjacent to the original entry, providing a light-filled centrepoint for the house at the junction of the old and new. T&G wainscoting to the stairwell and upper level is an archetypical finish for this home's era and provides a lovely flow to the master and children's bedrooms, separated by a raised gallery. Bay windows in the kids' rooms add romance and charm, along with external character.

Internally, the layout flows seamlessly between separate zones with modern, open living spaces and quiet, more private areas within the home. Each area is equally well designed to facilitate and enable comfortable everyday family life.

Careful selection of finishes and attention to detail underpin the luxurious ambience and classic style of the interior, ensuring timeless appeal together with functionality and practicality. Recycling certain materials was pivotal in achieving a genuine outcome.

The original leadlights were salvaged and incorporated into new timber joinery for the front door, and the stairwell and kitchen windows, while art deco ceiling roses and cornices throughout echo the original detailing.

The kitchen and bathrooms are not without luxury, boasting finely detailed cabinetry, granite and marble benchtops, and moulded paint-finish doors with antique handles.
