A day at the museum is far from boring, as the WA Museums across the state are running an incredible range of exhibits, tours and activities throughout the school holidays. From a trip to the moon to a deep-sea diving adventure, check out our guide to the best museum events coming up at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, The Maritime and Shipwrecks Museums, and the museums of the Goldfields, Great Southern and Geraldton.

WA Museum Boola Bardip

WA Museum Boola Bardip is home to an amazing range of mainstay displays, open every day for the school holidays. To make your visit extra-special, check out their newest exhibition, To the Moon, featuring an incredible scale model of the lunar surface, a display showcasing the moon landing in 1969, and interactive activities perfect for the little ones. For the grown-ups, relax and unwind on Friday evenings at the Lunar Lounge, where the exhibition transforms into a bar, complete with cocktails and a chance to tour the exhibition after-dark.

Boola Bardip is also home to a range of activities exclusively for the school holidays, including a create-your-own Minecraft lunar landscape, early-learning activities, claymation workshops and even the chance to experiment with sound design and music-making in the heart of the museum.

Maritime and Shipwrecks Museum

Make the most of your school holiday trip to Fremantle with a visit to the Maritime Museum and Shipwrecks Museum, showcasing the seafaring history of Western Australia and beyond. Exhibition highlights include film legend James Cameron’s Challenging the Deep at the Maritime Museum, exploring Cameron’s pursuits for deep-sea adventures in his purpose-built submarine. 

School holiday activities at the Maritime Museum and Shipwrecks Museum include guided tours, Titanic-themed dress-ups, and an exciting walking tour of Fremantle on the hunt for LEGO displays.

Geraldton, Albany and the Goldfields

Heading away from the city for the holidays? The WA Museums in Geraldton, Albany and the Goldfields in Kalgoorlie have plenty of activities to keep the kids busy. In Geraldton, get busy with Minecraft-themed crafting, crystal workshops and even a create-your-own pet rock experience. At the Museum of the Great Southern in Albany, explore the high seas with pirate-themed activities like treasure hunts and digging for gold. And if you’re heading out East, the Museum of the Goldfields is showcasing native bush foods and Indigenous crafts.

NAIDOC Week

National NAIDOC Week runs from July 7 to July 14, and is a time to celebrate and highlight the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is, ‘Keep the Fire burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’.  

The WA Museums are running a variety of NAIDOC Week events, from weavng and traditional craft at Boola Bardip, tours and exhibitions at the Museum of Geraldton and the Goldfields, and peformances by the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Co. at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.
