Grab your VR goggles and boot up your gaming consoles because XR:WA is diving into the immersive world of virtual reality, augmented reality and computer games at Perth Cultural Centre this month. From September 17 – 19 you can experience multiple events, workshops, exhibits and panel discussions from industry professionals. Discover the possibilities of VR and AR, from gameplay to 360 degrees cinema viewing. Conference and Expo Director, Richard Sowada, shares his top picks for making the most of the festival whether you are yet to experience VR or an avid gamer.

Games and Experience Emporium

When: 18 – 19 September, 10am – 5pm
One of the most popular parts of XR:WA, the Games and Experience Emporium is free and suitable for all ages. Head over to Hackett Hall at WA Museum Boola Bardip to experience a packed program of over 20 locally developed computer games, free roam VR action, tabletop games and other immersive experiences. For gaming enthusiasts and those wanting to break into the industry, the Emporium provides the opportunity to meet the makers and road test their creations.

The Future of Truth: Deepfake & Ethics Panel

When: 18 September, 1:45pm
Ideal for curious minds, the free The Future of Truth: Deepfake & Ethics Panel invites creative, legal and ethical experts to pull apart AI science and ethics to examine where this area is moving – for better or for worse. Visit the State Library WA Theatre to learn about improving technologies and significant digital advances in the screen sector, like synthetic voice cloning and its use in film.

Game Narratives to Cinema Stories Panel

When: 18 September, 3:30pm
Special guest Simon McQuoid, director of Mortal Kombat (2021), will be here in person to lead the free Game Narratives to Cinema Stories Panel. Held at the State Library WA Theatre, this panel looks at the triumphs and tribulations of work in the film and gaming industry. Simon will share his experience in translating a game structure to a cinema experience, exploring the convergence of media forms across visuals, voice cloning, production software, audiences and access platforms.

Reflections of Iwanoff VR Experience

When: 10 – 18 September
Reflections of Iwanoff is a free, immersive VR experience. You’ll be transported back to mid 20th century Perth via the brutalist designs of renowned West Australian architecture icon, Iwan Iwanoff. Created as part of the WA Reflections partnership with Screenwest, the VR allows you to view a family home designed by Iwanoff, which was rebuilt digitally using the original architecture plans from the State Library’s collections. Visit the Nook at the WA State Library to enjoy this experience, complete with a bespoke tour of the home by Restoration Australia host Stuart Harrison.

360° VR Experience Showcase Exhibit and Experience

When: 17 – 19 September, 10am – 5pm
Pop on a headset and experience international and locally developed VR works for the 360° VR Experience Showcase Exhibit and Experience. Suitable for all ages, this immersive showcase includes social justice and environmental documentaries, experimental works, short narratives and explorations in animation. It will be hosted at the State Library WA’s Geographe Room, moving to WA Museum Boola Bardip for its final day. All exhibits are free and are guaranteed to transport you to another time and place, or even another world.
