Blackwood River Valley

The Blackwood River region is quirky and packed chock-full of unique activities that set it apart from the neighbouring areas. This somewhat neglected gem of the South West hosts festivals, niche museums and live music, with no shortage of the outdoorsy staples like walking trails and, of course, the Blackwood River itself.

The main towns include Balingup, Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, and Nannup, the latter two being the most popular places for visitors to gain their bearings. Balingup is a common halfway point for walkers on the Bibbulmun Track, given that it runs down the town's main street. Here, weird and wonderful events thrive, like the Medieval Carnivale, a ren-faire type annual weekend that throws the town back in time with jousting and jestering alike. Boyup Brook similarly hosts yearly festivals, albeit more typical, with Harvey Dickson's Rodeo in October showcasing the town's cowboy skills and the Country Music Festival in February bringing five days of the best local and national artists to the Blackwood River Region. Nannup hosts various events year-round, including the Garden Festival in August, the Art Festival in September, and the Music Festival in March. Any time of year is perfect for events in the South West.

Outdoor activities like mountain biking, swimming, fishing, and canoeing are accessible short distances from all the towns in the Blackwood River region. Still, the Blackwood River itself is a hub for these activities. Best accessed from Bridgetown or Nannup, it's ideal for birdwatching, canoeing and kayaking. Fully escorted canoe tours are recommended, as some river sections are fast-flowing but host some of the best views along the water. For fishing, Rainbow and brown trout, redfin perch and freshwater marron are found in the river at different times of the year, but make sure to double-check any bag limits or specifications by the Department of Fisheries beforehand. September to December is said to be the best time for fishing. There are also plenty of waterholes along the river for swimming. If you're one to avoid the water, the Blackwood River Walk is a two-kilometre track that crosses the waterway via a suspension bridge and is the best way to see the river.

The Blackwood River region offers just as much fresh local produce as other towns in the South West region. The Blackwood River Valley is home to more than fifty vineyards and more than 450 hectares of vines, along with orchards, farms, and dairies hosting tastings and classes. Plan your visit for a Friday evening when local musicians entertain the crowds at the local cideries.
