Tourist attractions

Nullarbor, SA 5690

Description

Located in the state of South Australia, Marrawijinie Cave is a unique natural wonder well worth a visit.

The entrance to the cave, which is open to the public, can be found in the locality of Nullarbor, near the Nullarbor Plain. Consisting of several entries, the main entrance to the cave is a doline, a collapsed cave that is typical of the Nullarbor's karst topography. There are two other cave entries in the vicinity, which visitors can explore to experience the unique natural beauty of the surrounding area. The caves are also home to hawks and swallows, who use the caves as nesting sites, making this a great opportunity to observe some of Australia’s beautiful wildlife.

One of the most interesting features of Marrawijinie Cave is the hand stencils found on the walls- a testament to the long history of the land and the Indigenous Australians who inhabited it. The stencils were created using ochre and are a highlight of the cave exploration experience.

Since June 2013, Marrawijinie Cave has been embraced within the Nullarbor Wilderness Protection Area. This simply means that this natural wonder is now protected to ensure that it retains its natural beauty for generations to come.

Marrawijinie Cave is a unique natural cave system in South Australia. It is an opportunity to explore an area rich in history, and natural beauty. We highly recommend experiencing this unique and spectacular location, keeping in mind the necessary safety measures
