Description
Djukbinj National Park is a protected area located in the Northern Territory of Australia, approximately 66 km (41 mi) east-south-east of Darwin.
Established on 3 April 1997, the park covers a significant portion of land with a fascinating historical background. It was previously part of the Wulna Land Claim and includes areas such as the former Escape Cliffs Historical Reserve, Cape Hotham Forest Reserve, Cape Hotham Conservation Reserve, and parts of the former Marrakai Conservation Reserve.
Following the settlement of the land claim, the Limilngan-Wulna Aboriginal Corporation leased the area back to the former Conservation Commission of the Northern Territory. This lease allowed the commission to use the land for the purposes of a national park. A joint management agreement was signed on 7 November 1994, officially establishing Djukbinj National Park.
The park holds significant historical importance, particularly as it encompasses the site of the first settlement attempt by the Government of South Australia in the Northern Territory. This area, known as Escape Cliffs, was listed on the Northern Territory Heritage Register on 12 January 2000. Exploring this historical reserve provides valuable insights into the First Settlement period and the region's culture.
Djukbinj National Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience history, culture, and stunning views. With picnic areas and walking trails, it is an ideal destination for an adventurous and informative day-trip.
