Description
Mataranka Falls is a popular travel destination in the Northern Territory of Australia, located south of Katherine.
The small town of Mataranka is known for its sandy-bottomed thermal pool, pastoral history, and as a stop for tourers. The area gained fame from the novel We of the Never Never by Jeannie Gunn, which was written about nearby Elsey Station.
In Mataranka Falls, there are breathtaking scenery and activities to enjoy. Hiking and swimming are the most popular activities, with a well-marked trail from the 12-mile yards to Mataranka Falls. The sandy-bottomed thermal pool is also a must-see attraction, with crystal clear water and a pleasant swimming temperature.
During the wet season from October to April, heavy rainfall and flooding can make it difficult to access some areas.
To reach Mataranka Falls, you can drive from Katherine, which is just over an hour's drive away. Alternatively, there are tours available for visitors starting from Darwin. The Explorers Way self-driving route from Adelaide to Darwin also passes through Mataranka Falls for those seeking an adventurous journey.
Mataranka and Bitter Springs in Elsey National Park are free to enter and do not require any permits, allowing visitors to easily explore and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
