Description

Nitmiluk National Park, previously named Katherine Gorge National Park, is a must-visit destination in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Located approximately 244 km southeast of Darwin and 23 km northeast of Katherine, the park is around a series of gorges on the Katherine River and Edith Falls. The park borders the northern edge of Kakadu National Park, and its stunning gorges and surrounding landscape have great ceremonial significance to the local Jawoyn people. Nitmiluk, meaning "place of the cicada dreaming" in the Jawoyn language, is known for its 13 spectacular gorges that are carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River.

During the Dry season, which runs roughly from April to October, Nitmiluk Gorge's waters are placid in most spots and ideal for swimming and canoeing. The gorges have rapids and falls, and they follow the Katherine River, the source of which lies in Kakadu. Swimming and canoeing are permitted, but visitors need to be mindful of freshwater crocodiles that nest along the riverbanks. They are generally harmless to humans. Swimming is strictly prohibited during this season. Visitors can explore the gorges by taking a cruise of various lengths, with some going as far as the fifth gorge. Notably, Nitmiluk Gorge hosted the final challenge and the finish line of The Amazing Race Australia 4.

Exploring Nitmiluk National Park is never a hassle as there are plenty of facilities available. One can explore the gorges by canoe or flat-bottomed boat on their own, or by taking a guided tour from the visitor centre. During
