Description

No. 2 Goods Shed Vic, located at 733 Bourke Street, Docklands, is a large railway freight shed built in the former Spencer Street rail yards off Flinders Street Extension, Melbourne.

Constructed in 1889 as 'A Goods Shed,' 2 Goods Shed was the longest single building in Australia at the time of its construction.

The polychromatic face brick structure with solid brick outside walls, bluestone sills, and slate-tiled gable roof is supported on cast iron columns at nine-meter intervals. The building has three gabled roofs with clerestories or lanterns, while central trusses span 15 meters and side spans 9 meters. The upper floor uses terracotta lumber for fire prevention. 2 Goods Shed has twenty-six arched doors on the east side and twenty-eight on the west side. It has loading platforms for horse-drawn vehicles on the outside and rail platforms to three tracks internally. The building has an overall length of 370 meters.

The two-story office block at the southeast corner has a central tower with stucco decoration to the main door surround and the VR insignia with a crown above the east facade. Additionally, it has a pediment with the construction date '1889'. Later, the clock face was installed at Ballarat.

The 2 Goods Shed was built in 1889–90 to replace previous timber and corrugated iron structures. These structures had proved inadequate for the increased freight experienced in Melbourne during the boom years of the 1880s. The contract for 2 Goods Shed was awarded to A.P. Tozer and Company on 19 August 1889. Builders completed the project for
