Description

Takarunga / Mount Victoria is a popular destination for anyone traveling to Auckland, New Zealand.

This is one of Auckland's 14 Tupuna Maunga, or ancestral mountains, and the highest volcano on the North Shore. The tihi and summit road at Takarunga offer stunning views across the Waitemata to the city center, making it a great viewing place for watching ships and the sunset.

Takarunga was an important Maori pa site for many years with terracing and kumara pits still visible. The tihi (summit) sits at 66 meters high, and its age is currently unknown. Its lava flows now line much of Devonport's waterfront. In the late 19th century, a gun fort was built on top of the hill to defend the city of Auckland.

Visitors can take a walk along the Takarunga / Mt Victoria Path, which is a great way to explore the area's historic walks. The path offers a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the area while enjoying the stunning views. Mount Victoria Reserve is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. It is one of the best vantage points in all of Auckland, offering spectacular views of the Auckland City Skyline and the harbor. The reserve is a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic while taking in the breathtaking views.

For those interested in the geological history of the area, the book "Volcanoes of Auckland: The Essential guide" by Bruce W. Hayward, Graeme Murdoch, and Gordon Maitland is a great resource. It provides an in-depth look at the geological history of the area and the formation of the Auckland volcanic field. Overall, Takarunga / Mount Victoria is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Auckland. Its stunning views, rich history, and unique geological features make it a truly unforgettable experience.
