The West Australian Symphony Orchestra continues it’s series of live film music concerts with a stunning rendition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
From young fans to the older admirers, JK Rowling’s magical world continues to attract a diverse range of people. Orchestra lovers mingled with Potterheads as the wonderful West Australian Symphony Orchestra brought John Williams’s powerful movie score to life.

At a time where on-demand movies are becoming more popular than novels and the Harry Potter films are so readily available on streaming services, the question could be asked, why would this orchestral experience be any better than watching with surround sound at home? But it turns out there are still better ways to enjoy these amazing films.

It’s hard to know what to expect if you haven’t been to one of these performances before – is it a concert? Is it a movie screening? The answer is both, for those who’ve never had the opportunity to witness this wonderful, original live event. The music takes centre stage as an amazing addition to the well-loved movie, while positioning the orchestra in front of the HD screen gave the whole show a wonderful sense of inclusion and intimacy.

The audience were also encouraged to join in, and they did, as whoops and cheers rang out when fan favourites were pictured, along with some vigorous boos for the not so popular characters. The laughter and applause heard throughout the performance added an extra element to the soundtrack on stage.

The orchestra timed every piece brilliantly; giving a performance that went seamlessly with the story on screen. You’d be forgiven for forgetting you were listening to a live orchestra, as the memorable scenes were brought to life right in front of this enthusiastic audience.

The whole performance was beautifully wrapped up with the music for the final credits, as WASO took the spotlight to finish off a magical concert.

It was hard to imagine ever being more of a Harry Potter fan than I already am, but this perfectly assembled live show has reignited my love of these stories. An amazing performance by WASO filled the audience with a sense of inclusion that let us truly believe we were part of the magic.

WASO's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban live in concert will be at the Riverside Theatre on May 4 and 5 2018. Find out more.
